Eggs and sperm from skin cells

What if scientists could create fertilisable eggs and healthy sperm from the skin cells of men and women? A good thing?

Molecular biologist Katsuhiko Hayashi has done pretty much that – with mice. Hayashi was able to make primordial germ cells (PGCs) that can produce both sperm and eggs. He then used the eggs produced from the PGCs to create live mice.

As Hayashi and his team take on the rather large transition from mice to monkeys and humans, they are setting the course for the future of infertility treatments.

On the one hand, it opens up a can of ethics...

But on the other?

Go Science!!!
